" The Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) Nexus project was kicked off today in Amman, Jordan 🇯🇴 on the sidelines of the third high-level meeting for the WEFE Community of Practitioners in the Red Sea Countries. The project is funded by a generous grant from the Swedish government 🇸🇪 and the Union for the Mediterranean. Representatives from the Swedish Embassy, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), and government officials from member countries, including Lebanon 🇱🇧, Iraq 🇮🇶, Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦, Egypt 🇪🇬, and Jordan 🇯🇴, participated in the kick off meeting. The project aims to promote the WEFE nexus approach in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to support environmental sustainability and socio-economic activities in the region. This will be achieved through establishing a WEFE nexus Hub in the Red Sea countries, following a participatory approach. Additionally, the project involves reviewing and enhancing relevant policies, capacity building within member countries, and implementing pilot projects to promote the exchange of experiences and foster an adaption of nexus approach in targeted communities. This approach is intended to contribute to integrated resource management for sustainable development in the region. the field visit to Al-Wala Dam and, and the site of the pilot project planned to promote a Water-Energy-Food-Environment (WEFE) Nexus approachin Madaba, under the WEFE Nexus for Sustainable Development in MENA Project, which is being implemented by INWRDAM, and funded by a generous grant from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) 🇸🇪 Embassy of Sweden in Amman and the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Union for the Mediterranean. Representatives from SIDA, UfM, and member states of the WEFE Nexus Community of Practices from the Arab Republic of Egypt 🇪🇬 and Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦 participated in the visit. The pilot project, adopting the WEFE Nexus approach, aims to develop agriculture plans and cropping patterns according to market studies and socio-economic baseline studies for Madaba. It utilizes solar-powered hydroponic systems that use water from Al-Wala Dam. The pilot project will demonstrate this WEFE Nexus approach to the local community, showcasing the effectiveness and economic and environmental benefits of integrated natural resource management. "
