Institutionalizing WEFE Nexus in Jordan and Egypt

Project Title: Establishment and Institutionalization of WEFE Nexus for MENA

Donor: The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA)

Development Partner: The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM)

Target Countries: MENA countries, with a thorough focus on Jordan, Egypt and Lebanon

Starting date: January, 2023

End date: December, 2024

Context

A remarkable achievement in institutionalizing WEFE would be the agreement with the government of Egypt to provide technical support to establish a WEFE Nexus Unit in coordination with the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MoWRI) as the focal point for this Unit, mirroring the success of the WEFE Framework established in Jordan. This agreement is a significant milestone for the action, as it demonstrates the scalability and adaptability of the WEFE approach across different national contexts. This initiative highlights the potential for regional cooperation and knowledge sharing, setting a precedent for other countries in the region to follow.

Another remarkable achievement is requesting the WEFE  team and INWRDAM’s Executive Director to support institutionalization of the WEFE Framework in Jordan throughparticipating in its technical workgroup headed by the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation (MoPIC). This request was also called by the Jordanian Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MoWI).

The important relationships and networks established among local and regional stakeholders and partners have been instrumental in advancing the WEFE Nexus action. INWRDAM’s diplomatic relations among governments are crucial for fostering regional dialogue and advocacy on WEFE, enabling a unified approach to addressing shared challenges and promoting sustainable development.
